Message from the Commissioner of Higher Education
Crises on college campuses have drawn increased attention of governors, campus and community leaders, and concerned parents and students, especially as disasters whether from natural causes or violence have become more commonplace. It is inevitable that more crises will occur on college campuses that will result in harm to human life. All of us can and should take the necessary steps to lessen the likelihood that another crisis will happen, and when it does, to reduce the extent of damage that occurs. We have a collective responsibility to not sit idly by waiting for the next emergency to strike.
While campuses are relatively safe places, every campus, regardless of its size, can benefit from increased attention to security issues and challenges so it is well prepared prior to, during, and after its next emergency.
This website, designed and maintained by the state’s Higher Education Subcommittee of the Homeland Security Advisory Council, is intended to serve as a reliable source of information as we work together to keep our campuses as safe as possible. Resources and initiatives across a wide array of topics are included, e.g., mental health information, campus law enforcement, information technology, the Missouri Alert Network, curriculum development, potential legislation, planning and exercises. Information is also provided about funding opportunities, professional development workshops, recent reports and articles on campus safety, and subcommittee meetings.
We welcome your active engagement with this website. Let us know what is valuable, how we can better meet your needs, and ways the website can and should be improved.
Best,
Robert B. Stein, PhD.
Commissioner of Higher Education
